EFFECTIVE TRAINING

Many temples that invest in training fail to get the most from their investment. Devotees are sent on courses without being sufficiently clear about why they are attending the course. Devotees attend courses without setting clear learning objectives for the course. They come back from a course and are not debriefed and set longer term learning goals. Here are some ideas for getting the most from your investment in training.

Link Training To Temple's Objectives
What are your objectives and targets for the year? Training works best if linked to hard, measurable objectives. This could be (launching a new preaching project, enrolling new congregational members, growing existing resources, increasing book distribution, enhancing media presence). In this way it is much easier to measure the overall effectiveness of the training.

Identify The Training Needs Of Your Team And Individual Devotees
Assess the training needs of the team by relating its current performance to desired performance. In which areas is the team underperforming?

Pre-Brief The Team And Set Individual Learning Objectives
Prior to training taking place explain the reason for the training and set expectations together on the outcomes for the service. Talk to the team as a group and individually, set objectives for each devotee so they focus on their individual learning points during the training process.

Run The Training Programme. Set The Action Plans
Make sure the team comes back from training with personal action plans for following up the skills learned or revisited on the course. Discuss these with each devotee and get team feedback on course effectiveness.

Monitor Performance
Monitor the performance of the team and individuals, following the course. Spend time with team members in the field and look for changes in behaviour. Give the appropriate feedback to encourage proper performance. Remind devotees of the training points they may have forgotten, or misunderstood.

Measure Results
Measure the results of the team and look for individual success stories. Look for further training opportunities, such as team meetings, joint attendance of workshops, or personal coaching. Encourage personal self-development by inducing devotees to read books, listen to tapes, consult experienced devotees, etc.

HEAVEN AND HELL

My friend executive coach Marshall Goldsmith gave us a great tip for relationships and leadership:

HELP MORE. JUDGE LESS.

When we are in the zone of helping, it is like heaven. If we are in the zone of judging, it is like hell.

SIMPLE BUT POWERFUL SUCCESS FORMULA

Make a list of all the things you know you should be doing.
Start doing them today.

Make a list of all the things you know you should not be doing.
Stop doing them right away.

POTENTIAL

Would you agree that vast majority of devotees possesses much more talent and capacity that present services require or even allow them to do?

If so, then how can we unleash that potential of the devotees in our movement?

How do we create training, systems and structures so they can grow, develop and flourish in devotional service and make a significant contribution to the preaching mission?

WHAT I LEARNED IN DEVOTEE CARE MEETINGS

I want to share some points and questions I have learned in our Devotee Care Meetings at ISKCON Zurich:
  1. In Bhagava-gita Krsna shifts from being a friend to Arjuna to being an authority. Similarly, we can raise our friendship to a next level if we have deep conversations about how to advance in Krsna consciousness.
  2. Devotee Care Meetings facilitate openness and create supportive family environment.
  3. If we are aware that Krsna and gurus love us all, it will be easier for us to love each other.
  4. How to fulfill all our spiritual and material needs in a Krsna conscious way?
  5. If everyone gives something, it's more than nothing.
  6. How can we bring about the best in each other?
  7. What will I do in order to create relationships I would like to have?
  8. What are your languages of love? How do you express or receive love?
  9. Be clear what is your intention.
  10. What is your relationship with yourself?
  11. In Devotee Care Meetings we feel inspired, supported and challenged.
  12. My challenge is attentive chanting and daily reading the books of Srila Prabhupada.
  13. Temple is a place of support, guidance, learning, worship, hearing, chanting, developing deep spiritual relationships, empowerment, and challenge.
  14. Temple is a place where one can experience a higher taste.
  15. My role is helping devotees succeed by being a source of support, guidance, inspiration, and education. I strive to get the mercy of devotees and Krsna.
  16. Temple is a place of empathy and powerful questions.
  17. We want to create Vaikuntha atmosphere (without anxiety).
  18. Temple is a place of 6 loving exchanges among devotees:  http://vedabase.net/noi/4/en1
  19. Temple is a place full of life and full of love.
  20. We want to be positively surprised every day.
  21. We appreciate and acknowledge everyone's realizations and contribution.
  22. How can we support each devotee in meeting their challenges and achieving their goals?
  23. The more you focus on gratitude the more you see that there is no tiger (no problems).
  24. Sharing realizations with each other is important. We are not the only one here.
  25. We want to address everyone's needs (body, mind and spirit).

WHEN WILL KRSNA GIVE ME MORE MONEY?

The answer is given here:

http://vedabase.net/sb/7/13/32/en1

And here:

If money comes, you don't hate it. Welcome. But it should be used properly. That is proper use. If you use properly your money, then you make your path parapavarga, clear. And if you misuse your money, then you become again entangled in the 8,400,000's of species of life.
- Lecture Srimad-Bhagavatam 1.2.8 -- Bombay, December 26, 1972

He is against Krsna, so why should Krsna give him any facilities? If you are against Krsna and you want credit without Krsna, you will fail. You must first be submissive, and then Krsna will give you all facilities.
- Life Comes From Life

THE FROG RACE

There was once a bunch of tiny frogs, who arranged a running competition. The goal was to reach the top of a very high tower. A big crowd gathered around the tower to see the race and cheer on the contestants.

The race began …

No one in the crowd really believed that the tiny frogs would reach the top of the tower. They shouted, “Oh, it's way too difficult!!! They will NEVER make it to the top” and “Not a chance. The tower is too high”.

The tiny frogs began collapsing, one by one except for those who, in a fresh tempo, were climbing higher and higher ...

The crowd continued to yell, “It’s too difficult! No one will make it!”

More tiny frogs got tired and gave up… But one continued higher and higher. This one wouldn’t give up! And he reached the top.

Everyone wanted to know how this one frog managed such a great feat.

His secret? This little frog was deaf!

Lesson: Ignore the pessimism and negativity of others or of our own mind. It can take our dreams away from us. Stay positive, pray, and persist.

DIRECT THE DRIVER

Our body is just like a car, and our mind is like a driver.
Bhagavad-gétä says, yanträrüòhäni mäyayä. Our body is a vehicle made of the material energy.
We are now seated in this car given to us by the material nature.
And the driver is the mind.
But the driver is not under our control.
The driver is taking us anywhere he likes.
So therefore the soul, the proprietor of the car, is requesting the driver,
"My dear mind, do not drive in this way, it is dangerous. Please worship and serve Lord Kåñëa, who is our fearless shelter."

SIX SPIRITUAL SUCCESS PRINCIPLES

(1) Accept things favorable for discharging devotional service
(2) Reject things unfavorable
(3) Firmly believe that the Lord will always protect us
(4) Feel exclusively dependent on the mercy of the Lord
(5) Have no interest separate from the interest of the Lord
(6) Always feel meek and humble

- Sanatana Gosvami

These points describe:
- What we should do (1 and 2)
- What we should believe (3)
- How we should feel (4 and 6)
- What we should desire (5)

If we follow these six principles, or even only one of them, our spiritual life and life in general will improve enormously.

HOW TO TURN?

How do we turn a spoiled mummy's boy into a spiritual hero?
How do we get him to control his tongue, to be focused on service and mission, to see and treat women as mothers?
How do we motivate and inspire him to think big, set impossible goals and - actually achieve them?
How do we do it ... ?

Perhaps starting with ourselves.

PURE SPEECH

O King, a saintly person is just like water because he is free from all contamination, gentle by nature, and by speaking creates a beautiful vibration like that of flowing water. SB 11.7.44

In spite of my inability, whatever I have been able to hear [from the spiritual master] and whatever I could assimilate I am now describing in glorification of the Lord by pure speech, for otherwise my power of speaking would remain unchaste. SB 3.6.36

Austerity of speech consists in speaking words that are truthful, pleasing, beneficial, and not agitating to others, and also in regularly reciting Vedic literature. Bg 17.15

Maharaja Prthu's speech was very beautiful, full of metaphorical language, clearly understandable and very pleasing to hear. His words were all grave and certain. It appears that when he spoke, he expressed his personal realization of the Absolute Truth in order to benefit all who were present. SB 4.21.20

Maharaja Prthu was beautiful in his external bodily features, and his speech was also very glorious in all respects. His words, which were nicely composed in highly metaphorical ornamental language, were pleasing to hear and were not only mellow but also very clearly understandable and without doubt or ambiguity. SB 4.21.20 Purport

WHY SNOW?

Huge snow here in Zurich. And it does not stop.

Srila Prabhupada explains:

"When there are natural disturbances like blowing cyclones, too much heat or snowfall, and uprooting of trees by hurricanes, it is to be understood that the demoniac population is increasing and so the natural disturbance is also taking place. There are many countries on the globe, even at the present moment, where all these disturbances are current. This is true all over the world. There is insufficient sunshine, and there are always clouds in the sky, snowfall and severe cold. These assure that such places are inhabited by demoniac people who are accustomed to all kinds of forbidden, sinful activity."

"Sometimes, when there is a snowfall, we see that the whole sky is covered by a cloud. But actually that cloud is covering only an insignificant part of the whole sky. Because we are very minute, however, when a cloud covers a few hundred miles of the sky, to us the sky looks completely covered. Similarly, this entire material manifestation (called the mahat-tattva) is like a cloud covering an insignificant portion of the spiritual sky. And just as when the cloud clears we can see the bright, sunlit sky, so when we get clear of this covering of matter we can see the original, spiritual sky."

MAHATMAS (GREAT SOULS)

The mahatmas are equipoised.
They do not see any difference between one living entity and another.
They are very peaceful and are fully engaged in devotional service.
They are devoid of anger, and they work for the benefit of everyone.
They do not behave in any abominable way.
Such people are known as mahatmas.

Srimad Bhagavatam

If we say "That's just the way I am", we choose to stay the same.

ROLE

My role in your life or my service to you is not to judge you or fix you.
My service is to help you succeed in every area of life, in any way I can.

EXCUSES

If we put as much energy into achieving our goals as we spend making up excuses for failure, we would actually surprise ourselves.

One of the main things that holds us back from moving in the direction of our goals and dreams is usually our favorite excuses and a lack of self-discipline.

Everyone wants to be successful. Everyone wants to be healthy and happy. But most of us are not willing to pay the price. Maybe occasionally we may be willing to pay part of the price, but not the whole price.

We always have some excuse or rationalization for not disciplining ourselves to do everything we need to do to achieve our goals.

Refuse to make excuses because excuses will not help you achieve what you want or help you to be more happy.

SUCH A THIN CLOTH

Gopalasyapriya dasi:
This one evening all the sankirtan women were allowed to go and have darshan (with Srila Prabhupada) and sit out in the front yard. I can’t even remember what he was talking about, but then there was a lull and it was quiet and everyone was just sitting there.
And he was looking at me and he asked, “Are you all right?” I didn’t quite think he was talking to me because there was no reason for him to ask me anything like that. He said it a few times. He looked at me again and said, “Are you all right?” Then I finally said, “Are you talking to me?” And he said, “Such a thin cloth. Haven’t you got a cloth?” because it was kind of chilly and most of the devotees had chaddars and sweaters and things.
He asked if I needed a cloth, and I don’t know what I said, something like “Well, I had one but not with me.” Then he started talking to Kuladri, who was right there next to him, and told him that “You must find out if they have everything they need…the women need to be protected.” He said, “They will not ask. You must ask them once a month and make sure that they are having everything they need.”
I remember afterwards a few of the devotees were crying and feeling like he was so observant and concerned and he really does care about all of us.

TAKE CARE OF YOUR SON

Carudesna das:
After Prabhupada arrived, he had darshan and I was invited to come up. I had my son with me and I walked in and Prabhupada said, “Who is this?” I said, “This is my son.” He said, “This is a very nice boy. I want you to take care of him and take care of your family.”
I was thinking more about book distribution because that was my service. At the time in the movement, family life was not something that we really thought about. So later on, my son and daughter were put into prison. It was when that happened I went back to that and I heard that clear from Prabhupada, “Take care of your son, take care of your family,” and I realized that I had failed in that effort.
So for five years I did some soul searching. I wanted to really understand the true meaning of family. So I felt inspired to try to establish an organization to deal with the issue of family. The organization that I’ve established, it’s called “Save the Family Foundation.”
The first thing that we try to do is establish the fact that God has to be the center; and if God is in the center, then there is a foundation on which to build the family. I’ve been able to do that, and now my son and daughter are doing very well. They’re living productive lives.
Going back to Prabhupada’s instruction that the way to really please my spiritual master is to take care of my son and take care of my family, so I’ve dedicated myself to that mission.

MUTUAL TRUST

Srila Prabhupada gave us the principle of love and trust. Trust starts with us. Transforming a temple, department, or family begins at the personal level. Other devotee's trust in us grows out of our personal trustworthiness - our character and competence. When mutual trust exists, devotees feel motivated to go out of their way to help and support one another. We may ask: What's it like being in a relationship with me?

And how well do I:
1. Keep promises and honor commitments?
2. Acknowledge and apologize for my mistakes?
3. Remain loyal to the absent?
4. Share information, both positive and negative, with people who need it?
5. Involve people in decisions that affect them?
6. Give credit where credit is due?
7. Communicate consistently, regardless of the situation or the person's authority or influence?
8. Honor confidential and sensitive information?

Discover the Benefits of Increased Trust

The effects of increased trust reach deep into the heart and soul of devotees and temples. Why? Because trust lies at the very core of spiritual leadership and effective devotee interaction. Here are just a few of the benefits of building trust:
1. Increased personal trust and trustworthiness
2. Strengthened relationships and improved communication in all areas  of missionary activities
3. Sustained positive change, resulting in more effective and cohesive devotee teams
4. Decreased frustrations caused by dysfunctional relationships
5. Increased commitment to ISKCON's strategy and vision
6. Drastic reduction or elimination of politics and infighting
7. Improved quality of services and interactions in temples and  projects

RE-IMAGINE

Imagine - if we could have so much love in our heart for Krsna that we would be ready to do anything for Him.

Imagine - if we would see every devotee as precious.

Imagine - if we would see every living entity as a child of God.

Imagine - if we would happily push ourselves beyond our limits every day.

What would the life be like?

OFFER WHAT IS MOST DEAR

"Whatever is most desired by one within this material world, and whatever is most dear to oneself -- one should offer that very thing to Me. Such an offering qualifies one for eternal life."

One should offer his most dear possession to Lord Krsna, not that which is superfluous or unwanted. If one is most attached to his family, one should see that his family is engaged in Lord Krsna's service. If one is most attached to money, that should be given for propagating Krsna consciousness. And if one considers one's intelligence to be most valuable, he should preach Krsna consciousness with great logic and reason. If we offer our most valuable possessions to Lord Krsna, we will automatically become dear to the Lord and go back to Godhead.

"Whatever one finds pleasing or enjoyable he should immediately offer to the Supreme Lord, and even his wife, children, home and very life air he should offer at the lotus feet of the Supreme Personality of Godhead."

ENTHUSIASM

We practice bhakti-yoga with full-hearted enthusiasm, perseverance, and determination, by following the prescribed duties in the association of devotees and by engaging completely in activities of goodness.

We perform our duty avoiding the lower modes of material nature, without false ego, with great determination and enthusiasm, and without being shaken by success or failure.

A devotee in Krsna consciousness is always enthusiastic to do his service. He does not worry about the hardship he has to undertake. He is always enthusiastic. He does not care for success or failure. He is equal in both happiness and distress.

Vidura is an example of a person who had left his home enthusiastically, for a better life. Unless one is convinced of a better life after renunciation of the present life, one cannot stick to the renounced order of life simply by changing dress or staying outside of his home.

GRADUALLY YOU'LL REALIZE EVERYTHING

So this Krsna consciousness movement is not a sectarian movement. It is good for all human being because as soon as there is question of Krsna, people will hear.

Actually, it is happening all over the world. Especially the younger generation, why they are taking interest? Because loka-hitam. They are understanding that it is beneficial.

Every student, every disciple, they write me letter how much they are feeling grateful, that "We have got something. Prabhupada, you have given us something." Of course, I have not given. It is not my property. I have simply informed them, "Here is Krsna, and the life's business is to become a devotee."

Krsna said, man-mana bhava mad-bhakto mad-yaji mam namaskuru [Bg. 18.65]. This is your business. So anyone who becomes engaged in this loka-hitam, beneficial to the human society, he will be happy.

But he has to control over these things: ahara-nidra-bhaya-maithunam ca. These animals propensities should be controlled. Then it will be impetus. It will give acceleration to advance in Krsna consciousness.

Therefore we have got the restriction: no illicit sex life, no gambling, no meat-eating, no intoxication. If we can control, if you follow these regulative principles and regularly chant Hare Krsna maha-mantra, gradually you'll realize everything.

- Prabhupada

SRIMAD BHAGAVATAM SUCCESS PRINCIPLES

SERIOUSNESS AND SINCERITY
Anyone who thus engages in the devotional service of the Lord, seriously and sincerely, with his mind, words and body, and who is fixed in the activities of the prescribed devotional methods, is blessed by the Lord according to his desire.

HOW TO ENERGIZE DEVOTEES?

Few ideas:
1. Regularly take time to see how they are doing
2. Make with them their personal plan for constant improvement
3. Listen to their feedback about your performance
4. Create a Mutual Benefit Agreement (MBA)

OBSERVE THE MIND

After capturing animals, a cunning hunter does not put faith in them, for they might run away. Similarly, those who are advanced in spiritual life do not put faith in the mind. They always remain vigilant and watch the mind's action.

The mind is by nature very restless, and one should not make friends with it. If we place full confidence in the mind, it may cheat us at any moment.

The first business of one trying to advance in spiritual life is to control the mind and senses.

An unchaste woman is very easily carried away by paramours, and it sometimes happens that her husband is violently killed by her paramours. If the yogi gives his mind a chance and does not restrain it, his mind will give facility to enemies like lust, anger and greed, and they will doubtlessly kill the yogi.

Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakura used to say that in the morning our first business should be to beat the mind with shoes a hundred times. and, before going to bed, to beat the mind a hundred times with a broomstick. In this way one's mind can be kept under control.

An uncontrolled mind and an unchaste wife are the same. An unchaste wife can kill her husband at any time, and an uncontrolled mind, followed by lust, anger, greed, madness, envy and illusion, can certainly kill the yogi. When the yogi is controlled by the mind, he falls down into the material condition. One should be very careful of the mind, just as a husband should be careful of an unchaste wife.

The mind is the root cause of lust, anger, pride, greed, lamentation, illusion and fear. Combined, these constitute bondage to fruitive activity. What learned man would put faith in the mind?

The mind is the original cause of material bondage. It is followed by many enemies, such as anger, pride, greed, lamentation, illusion and fear. The best way to control the mind is to engage it always in Krsna consciousness (sa vai manah krsna-padaravindayoh [SB 9.4.18]). Since the followers of the mind bring about material bondage, we should be very careful not to trust the mind.

VOLUNTEER OR VICTIM

We can choose what we want to be in ISKCON: a volunteer or a victim.
Many devotees are complaining about so many things.
But devotee, especially a leader, can take up a more proactive role by being very optimistic about ISKCON's improvement and expansion.
Volunteer never complains.
He simply does his best to enhance the cause of ISKCON.
He will always encourage devotees and try to make the best of any situation.
People may (and will) complain about the leader, but excellent leader will not complain about people, because he agrees to serve them out of his own free will - to please Lord Krishna.

COURSES FOR ... HMM, SEE IT FOR YOURSELF

When I was 4, I was also giving courses. But my students were much different than today. You can see them in the background.

MUTUAL COACHING

Sometimes I speak about leadership and coaching when I give a lecture in the temple.
After the lecture devotees ask: Who will be the coach?
I reply: "If you cannot find anyone to coach you then we can coach each other. Learn how to coach and do it, as service to Vaisnavas."
What does it mean to coach each other?
It means high quality devotee association.
"Let's speak boldly how we can improve. Please give me feedback - with courage and consideration. And if you wish, I'll give you mine - also carefully, with due respect for you."
What kind of feedback?
Improvement suggestions.
And tools and principles for dealing with spiritual life's challenges.

THE POWER OF QUESTIONS

Srila Prabhupada said that the whole world is full of questions and answers and that the human being, unless he is fast asleep at night, is busy with questions and answers.
The whole process of self-realization and Krsna consciousness starts with the Vedic aphorism athato brahma jijnasa – now, therefore, is the time to inquire of the absolute truth. Inquiry is extremely important in our spiritual tradition. However, I don’t think we use it enough and, also, we might not be aware what kind of questions appear in our mind.

Why Questions?
Questions that we ask influence our thinking and our thinking influences our actions and our actions influence our results. Therefore questions influence our results. The questions that we ask ourselves influence what we get and what we achieve in life.
There are empowering questions and disempowering questions. If one is aware what questions are better, then he can consciously choose to ask questions all day long that will bring him better results.

A Question That Saved A Life
There is a story of a man imprisoned in a concentration camp during a Second World War. He had a perfect situation to feel like a victim, but he was asking a different question.  He asked “How can I escape, how can I use this situation to find out a way to escape?” While other prisoners were asking “Why me, why God has put me in this situation? Why these Nazi’s are so cruel?”, this man did not bother, he did not waste his time with those questions. He was just asking “How can I escape?” Then one day he got the idea to mix with the corpses on the truck that unloaded them outside the camp. That saved his life. When the corpses, along with him, were unloaded outside the camp, he escaped.

Gita Cards
There is a way to train ourselves and train our mind to ask empowering questions. I have something called Gita Cards, that have short texts with questions and quotes by Srila Prabhupada. One of the cards is called “Ask the right question”. If you find the right question about any situation then it is a very powerful success tool which increases the likelihood of success in that situation.

Effective Questions
There are questions that waste time, e.g., “Why others are not perfect?”  That type of question is a waste of time because you can’t do much about it (unless you can influence them and they can accept what you tell them).
Better than asking why others are imperfect you can ask “How can I improve?” or “How can I influence them?”, if you want them to change. In this way you can learn what questions are most effective and use them.
One question that my audiences like in my seminars (sometimes it’s a wake up moment) is when I ask them “What do you want in your life, excuses or results?” Sometimes half the audience is being moved with it and they think “Oh my God, this is a question for me!”

Focus
People ask “How can I be more focused? How can I become more focused on what I want to do, without my mind being distracted?” I recommend that you ask yourself the right question. The good question immediately changes your focus, makes you refocus on your highest priorities, on what matters most to you. For example, if you find yourself lost during the day or you have too much to do, or you have nothing to do, you can ask yourself a wonderful question “What is the most valuable use of my time right now?”

Create Questions
One thing we can do individually is create questions that will inspire us or uplift us. Some devotees like to ask in the morning “How can I serve today or how can I contribute today?  What can I give today?” The day then starts in a wonderful way regarding your activities for the day.
There are devotees who sometimes fall into self-pity or they are not happy with what they have in their lives. I advise them to ask themselves in the morning “What am I grateful for?”  I ask them to write down 10 things they are grateful for.
You can also ask this wonderful question “Who are the people in my life that I love, who mean a lot to me?” This also changes your focus from being negative, depressed and in the scarcity mentality to understand what you already have.
I have caught myself so many times where I feel everything is there but I feel there is something lacking. Then if I look around I can find so many things that I need and I think “I don’t have this, I don’t have that”. But then if I look around a little more and think about who can help me and what is already, then I realize that everything or most if it is already there.

An Amazing Story
This is a true story about a man called W. Mitchell. He survived an aeroplane accident where he was heavily injured and it took him a very long time to recover. He was very determined to recover and he did. Then he had another (a motorcycle) accident where half of his body and face were burned. He became a complete invalid. While he was in hospital he was very determined, he had a very strong mind. He didn’t lament and ask “Why this has happened to me?”  Instead, he asked “How can I use this?” There was a beautiful nurse that was caring for him and he was asking himself “How can I go on a date with her?” His roommates laughed at him said “You are crazy, you’re like a piece of flash!” But he was asking this question and gradually they developed a relationship and this lady is now his wife. Also, another unbelievable thing is that this man is now a motivational speaker. He goes in a wheel chair on a stage. He does not have fingers, he is still an invalid and his face is still burned but he teaches people how to be happy and successful. So he asked a different question in a difficult situation.

A Starting Question
When I ask people questions, one of the most difficult questions is “What do I want?” This question can be presented in many different versions such as “What one great thing would you dare to dream if you knew you could not fail?” There are many reasons why this type of question is the most difficult. One of them is fear of failure or fear of success.
People sometimes don’t know what they want or they are afraid to admit what they want. They then supress it. They can be afraid to admit it for many reasons, e.g., the desire may not be 100% pure, or they don’t think it’s achievable, or they fear they will get it, and then what? For example, if someone wants fame but they are afraid to admit it, they might think “What if I become famous? Then I am in trouble”

A Precious Discovery
One question I like to ask when someone comes to me with a problem is “HHHow would you solve this problem if you were super intelligent?” Or another question I ask is “If you were a world expert on these problems how would you solve it?”  Then I ask them to come up with 10 solutions. I had this session with a devotee and I asked him to find five solutions for his problem. At first he was reluctant but then he surrendered to the exercise. When I came back he was smiling. He was very happy that he had found his own solutions to his issue. So then I said you not a world expert anymore you are yourself again and I want you to find the best excuse for each of the solutions. I went out for 5-10 minutes, when I came back he was laughing uncontrollably. I asked him “What happened?” He replied “I just realised I have been sabotaging myself my whole life”. He had five nice solutions which he came up with and he also had five best excuses for each of those solutions. He was laughing at how ridiculous his excuses were. You can discover how the mind works and how the mind creates these excuses, why something cannot be done.

Why It Can Be Done?
Once I said to the devotees “I am not impressed when you tell me why something cannot be done. But instead you tell me how something impossible can be done, tell me how it can be accomplished and the steps involved”. We know from the scriptures that anything is possible by Krsna’s mercy and the mercy of the Vaisnavas. So if we properly connect and ask the right questions we can achieve amazing things.

What Else?
There is a powerful question that expands options. The question is “What else is possible? What else can I do?” You can always expand the number of options that you have about any issue, any problem you wan to solve, or result you want to achieve by simply asking “What else?” In this way you expand the possibilities and options.

Start A Day
I recommend starting a day with a good question, like “How can I please Srila Prabhupada today, or how I can please Krsna today, or how can I serve the devotees today?”  These are simple question but they can help a lot to define what we will do during the day. I think we are made in such a way that if we do not improve constantly we cannot be happy. You can do anything to please yourself, but if you don’t work on your character, your skills or your ability to please Krsna you cannot be happy.

Turnaround Question
The last powerful question that is very practical and relevant is the one we can ask when we face any problem. It is “How can I turn this problem into an opportunity?” Turning problems into opportunities is a very important skill. We face problems all the time, but instead of allowing problems to overwhelm us and think that these problems are there to destroy or crush us we can actually turn them around and use them to learn, to grow, to develop, and ultimately to become successful.

Questions To Satisfy The Soul
Srila Prabhupada writes in the Srimad Bhagavatam Purport (SB 1.2.5) that satisfaction of the soul can only be obtained by questions and answers on the subject of Krsna. In the ultimate issue, we want to ask questions that will help us make spiritual advancement and please Krsna and His devotees. We may use the above questions, and many other powerful questions, to transform our lives and gradually attain the ultimate goal of life.
